Ayurvedic skincare is skincare based on Ayurveda, the traditional system of wellbeing from India. It uses plant ingredients such as saffron, red sandalwood, manjistha, licorice and rose, usually as oils, powders and flower waters, and treats skincare as a daily ritual rather than a quick fix.
Where Ayurvedic skincare comes from
Ayurveda is a system of traditional practice from India that is thousands of years old. In Ayurveda, beauty is linked to balance: what you eat, how you sleep and how you care for your skin all play a part.
Ayurvedic tradition describes three doshas, or energies, that show up in the skin:
- Vata (air and space): skin that tends towards dryness.
- Pitta (fire and water): skin that tends towards heat, redness or sensitivity.
- Kapha (earth and water): skin that tends towards oiliness.
Most people are a mix. The aim of an Ayurvedic routine is to keep skin balanced, not to strip it.

- Treat with Varnya Drops, a few drops massaged upward.
- Moisturise with Kamal Dew.
- Finish with Nisha Veil Night Cream in the evening.

Frequently asked questions
Is Ayurvedic skincare suitable for sensitive skin?
Many Ayurvedic products are gentle, but plant ingredients and essential oils can still irritate some skin. Read the ingredient list and patch test before using anything new on your face.
Is Ayurvedic skincare natural?
Ayurvedic skincare is built on plant botanicals such as herbs, flowers, oils and clays. Some brands, H-Mantra included, also use modern ingredients such as hyaluronic acid where they help a formula.
What does my dosha mean for my skin?
In Ayurvedic tradition, Vata skin tends to be dry, Pitta skin tends to be warm or sensitive and Kapha skin tends to be oily. Most people are a mix, so use it as a guide to what your skin needs rather than a strict rule.
